The School of Performing Arts (http://www.performingarts.vt.edu/) at Virginia Tech seeks applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor of Cinema Production with experience in narrative filmmaking, interactive, immersive, transmedia, VR and/or 360-degree formats. The successful candidate will apply a range of emerging tools and platforms for storytelling and production and will display an eagerness to explore emerging technologies. Rank will be commensurate with experience. The successful candidate will be expected to advise and participate in the creation of new courses, mentor/supervise student projects, participate in interdisciplinary curriculum instruction and development, and contribute to Virginia Tech’s Creativity and Innovation Strategic Growth Area, which melds the exploration of innovative technologies with the design of creative experiences (https://www.provost.vt.edu/destination-areas/sga-overview.html). The expected teaching load is 2/2. Virginia Tech values research excellence, and the successful candidate will be expected to maintain a distinguished record of professional creative work beyond the university.
The cinema program in the School of Performing Arts integrates cinema production with the historical, aesthetic, and stylistic study of cinema. The successful candidate must have the ability to recruit, develop, and nurture student interest and be open to exploring collaborative endeavors with other School of Performing Arts faculty.
The School of Performing Arts is one of several programs at the university level supporting creative practice and interdisciplinary work in the arts. The School of Performing Arts includes academic programs in cinema, dance, music, and theatre and produces an extensive season of events in these fields. The School of Visual Arts (SOVA) includes academic programs in fine art, creative technology, art history, and visual communication design. Operating at the nexus of art, design, engineering, and science, the Institute for Creativity, Arts, and Technology (ICAT) is one of seven research institutes at Virginia Tech. The Moss Arts Center at Virginia Tech presents performing and visual arts programs that serve the campus, students, and the broader community.

Required qualifications:
- An MFA or PhD in cinema, moving image media, or a related field
- Record of research/creative work commensurate with Assistant or Associate rank
- Evidence of ability to integrate current and emerging moving image technologies in creative practice
- Record of successful teaching at the university level
- Ability to integrate multicultural perspectives into the curriculum and pedagogy
Preferred Qualifications:
- Demonstrated experience in teaching, research or creative work in ways that align with Virginia Tech’s university-wide, multi-disciplinary focus on digital and emerging technologies in the arts
- Record of leadership of successful program development
- Significant academic/professional experience
- Interest and experience in mentoring undergraduate students in creative and research activities
- Ability to work collaboratively with faculty across disciplinary boundaries
